Picture this:
You were recently in a serious car accident. You’ve recovered enough to be discharged from the hospital, but you’ll still need skilled nursing services for wound care and monitoring your vitals. You’re also ready to start physical therapy and occupational therapy. And you’ll need some help with daily living tasks like bathing and cleaning for awhile.
Health insurance won’t cover these home health services.
But you’re not worried, because you purchased long term care insurance.
What Is
Home Health Insurance?
Home health insurance covers both medical and non-medical home health services that may be needed over an extended period of time. They’re not typically covered by Medicare or health insurance.
Coverage could include things like changing bandages, wound care, administering medications, monitoring vital signs, activities of daily living like dressing, and more.
Receiving this type of care at home helps people age in place longer and avoid nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
Plan Features
- No deductibles
- Daily benefit up to $150
- Paid in addition to other insurance, including Medicare

Who Is This Coverage For?
In Short, Anyone
Aging in Place
These policies are most often purchased by people in their mid-50s and 60s who wish to stay in their homes as long as possible.
Injury Recovery
People of any age who are recovering from an accident, serious injury or illness may need home health services.
Serious Illness
Patients with a terminal illness, disability, stroke, cancer or dementia may also benefit from a long-term care insurance policy.
What About Medicare Home Health Care Benefits?
Medicare Part A and Part B provides limited coverage for in-home care. Part-time skilled nursing care and certain therapies in the home may be covered if they take place infrequently and over a short period of time. In addition, you must be homebound in order to qualify.
If you need additional care, you’re not homebound or you need frequent, ongoing services, Medicare doesn’t cover it. Personal care, such as bathing, laundry or cleaning, is not included. In-home care 24 hours a day is also not covered by Medicare.
Medigap coverage applies to the same services as Medicare, so it will only cover short term, medically necessary care.
